3D Cake Card

OK so I have to admit this Sizzix 3D Cake die has been a bit of a roller coaster for me. At first, I was so excited to get it. Then I tried to use it in my Cuttlebug (which it’s not really made for but it does work if you do a lot of tweaking), and I hated it. Finally, I saw this card today and Jan inspired me to give this project another go.

Supplies/Directions

  1. First I cut out all of the pieces for the cake using the 3D Cake Die and assembled it as per the instructions. I used Georgia Pacific white cardstock for the template pieces and Chocolate Chip DSP for the strips around the cake layers. The cake is mounted on a piece of 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ GP white cardstock, folded in half.
  2. Then, I glued that piece of white cardstock to a 5 3/4″ x 9 1/2″ piece of Textured Chocolate Chip cardstock, folded in half.
  3. Next, I decorated the top and bottom edges with Kiwi Kiss, Tangerine Tango, and Chocolate Chip cardstock. The striped paper is Hawaii Papaya DSP. I used the Scallop Edge Punch and the new EK Success Border Punch “Swiss Cheese”.
  4. I stamped “happy birthday” from last year’s SAB set Birthday Whimsy in White Craft ink and embossed it with White embossing powder.
  5. The candles were sponged with Kiwi Kiss ink first, then I glued some of the little dots that were punched out with the EK Success Swiss Cheese punch onto the candles. Finally, I used the Orange Supernova Fine Glitter on the “flames” with 2-way Glue and adhered the candles to the cake using Sticky Strip.
  6. I added some Kiwi Kiss dots to the cake using left overs from the Swiss Cheese punch.
  7. Lastly, I decorated the outside of the card. I used a piece of Tangerine Tango cardstock, 5 3/4″ x 4 1/4″, Chocolate Chip DSP 5 3/4″ x 3 3/4″, and adhered them to the card front. The strip across the front is Kiwi Kiss punched with the Scallop edge, chocolate chip, and a strip of Hawaii Papaya DSP. I stamped “happy” from Happy Everything in Chocolate chip ink, added two 5/16″ Basic Jumbo Brads in Brown, and adhered that to the card wih dimensionals.

Front of Card

Flowers for you

I usually shy away from Black, Red, and White, but for some reason I was in the mood for exactly that combination when I opened my new pack of Taste of Textiles paper. The black linen cardstock is really nice. It’s a good mix between paper and cloth, having the weight of cardstock with the slight sheen and texture of fabric.  Not wanting to waste it (you only get 2 sheets of each in the pack) I mounted a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ piece onto a white cardstock base. The image was stamped on Whisper White cardstock using Botanical Blooms, a free Saleabration set. I stamped the outlines in Basic Black and the colors used were Real Red, Kiwi Kiss, and Apricot Appeal.

The sentiment “for you” was stamped in Real Red in the center of a Basic Gray stamp from Great Friend. I cut out the shape and mounted it on the card with dimensionals.

Before adhering the Black Linen layer to the card base, I tied a piece of 5/8″ Real Red grosgrain ribbon around the front and used 3 pearls from the Pretties kit to finish off the card.

Just breezy

When I look at this card, I really feel like the butterfly and the leaves are blowing in the breeze. It’s nice and simple, but I like it very much.

I started out with a Going Gray card stock base, layered with Urban Garden DSP. The floral pattern in the DSP matches the leaves in the stamp set quite nicely. The image layer is mounted on Apricot Appeal and Basic Gray cardstock. I stamped the leaves from Great Friend in Kiwi Kiss and stamped off for the two-tone effect. The butterfly, from the same set, is stamped in Cameo Coral and I used the paper piercer to make the trail for the butterfly. In the upper right corner, I used two of the new 5/16″ Basic Brads in Silver. Finally, in the lower right corner, the sentiment “for you” is stamped in Cameo Coral.
